Thoughts from the Heart

Readjusting Goals and Expectations

It is almost two months into 2020, the new decade how are your goals holding up? Did you write goals for the new year? Hopefully, you are accomplishing some or all of your goals. A roadblock with goals at times when you have a chronic illness is that your best is at times ever-changing. Some days it is achievable to be able to accomplish everything on your to-do list. However, there are the days in between where it is a feat to take a shower.

When your good days and bad days can vary greatly, it can be frustrating to feel like you are accomplishing your goals. Expectations did not shift with ability. So many times, we hold our expectations of ourselves to the best of days and does not leave much grace for all of the other days. This brings to mind something my mother has told me time and time again. Would you say that thought to a friend? If the answer is no you do not need to tell yourself that.

With that thought in mind, I started to try to think of my expectations differently. Now, I have two different lists when it comes to what I want to achieve. One for the fantastic days of feeling like an almost normal human and one for the not so great days. Only looking at the set the is according to that day I do not start with thoughts that I am not doing as much as I should be. Then the guilt train does not arrive at the station.

Small goals, large goals oh my!

Also, there is an important thing to remember when setting these. Anything no matter how large or small can be turned into a goal. If it is key that you get it done then write it down. Personally, professionally, family, we all have things we want to change in some way. It is no joke that I say I have taking a shower on my struggle days list. Because it is important for me to fully feel like a person to be clean. This is a wonderful video that talks about goal setting and how important it is.
